The Department of Transport has announced the introduction of the new standard petrol grade, the E10. The E10 will gradually be distributed over the summer throughout the UK. But be aware, not all cars will be able to run on it.
What’s special about the E10 petrol?
The new E10 motor fuel was designed to contain less carbon and more ethanol than other fuels currently at the pumps. Ethanol is unique alcohol manufactured from plants such as sugar beet and wheat. It’s also possible to run cars purely on ethanol, which has been achieved in some South American countries, like Brazil for a few years now. But in most European countries, this substance is currently blended with fuel derived from oil.
Simple Explanation
So when you currently see E5 petrol at a pump station, you are being made aware that the unleaded petrol contains 5% ethanol, and 95% unleaded petrol. E10 will see the percentage of ethanol increase to 10% and the level of unleaded petrol will be reduced to 90%.
By introducing the new E10 motor fuel to the UK, it will then put us in the same category as Belgium, Finland, France and Germany and other European countries.
Why all the fuss?
The first thing is, E10 will help cut down the number of fossil fuels needed to power cars in the UK. And with the new climate change targets set by the British Government who announced the banning of selling new petrol and diesel-driven cars from 2030. What the E10 can also do is help cut carbon emissions by 750,000 tonnes a year. This equates to removing around 350,000 cars off the road.
Can my car use E10?
Well, all cars built after 2011 should be able to accept E10, but the fuel may not be compatible with some older vehicles manufactured before 2011, and if this is the case, the E10 fuel may damage your car. But help is on hand, the government has set up a website where you can check to see if your car will run on the new fuel. But make sure you read the small print, the agency is not liable for any damage caused to your vehicle as a result of drivers using their checker.
